    I for one pride myself on my over-riding cleverness and greatness of mind (though a single well-placed arrow can fell me…) Surely this quote is taken out of context, and cannot stand alone.

    Well, the writer was of a certain time and place, the manners of which are far different from our own. This quote also was actually in the mouth of one woman speaking of another. Specifically, one Mme de T— talking about one Comtesse de —.

    I think Mme de T— was also very clever though!
