Comments on films I’ve seen recently

January 18, 2009

All’ombra di una Colt: A good western. Well, a mediocre western, truth be told, but the music, by Nico Fidenco, elevates it beyond what the actors or script are able to do.

Pride and Glory: Was this supposed to be a good movie?

Maciste nella terra dei ciclopi: If you can get beyond the annoying music, this one isn’t half bad.

Il Paese del sesso salvaggio: A good film. It is a shame that it is on the “must see” list of cannibal films, because I think that crowd can’t really appreciate all the interesting non-cannibal moments.

The Game: I thought this Korean thriller was pretty interesting. Great acting and very good production values.

Some Recently Seen Films

Slumdog Millionaire: Enjoyable, but the storyline is marred by a number of clichés.

Gran Torino: I liked this one. It did follow a pattern most viewers will be familiar with, but it was a good experience.

Estômago: As far as food films go, this Brazilian piece is one of the better ones. Not as good as some of the Japanese ones like Tampopo, but still highly enjoyable despite a few minor flaws.

The Good, The Bad and The Weird: A very entertaining Korean “western” starring the magnificent Kang-Ho Song. The plot (find the treasure) is pretty bland, but the film itself is anything but, with a number of good set pieces, great scenery and a higher body count than I have seen in a good while.

Chugyeogja (2008)

The English title of this movie is The Chaser. If you like Korean films and like thrillers, then this is one you have to see. Inept police, pimp as detective. What more do you want?

Unfortunately, this is already slated for a Hollywood remake.
