La pipe de cidre

Reading Octave Mirbeau’s La pipe de cidre. This is the first Mirbeau book that seems a bit sub-par. It is a collection of short stories, the best one (title story) being about a fellow who puts the body of a Prussian soldier in a barrel of cider:

“It’s certainly good. . . . It’s good cider . . . but . . . but it’s curious. It has a taste . . . almost like shoes . . .”
